Cross-disciplinary Project Management - Reflection Essay 3

post_thumbnail

This post is the second in a series of eight reports that pertains to one of my courses called Media Design Projects which I am currently undertaking at Malmö University. These reports are supposed to serve both as a catalyst for the reading assignments but also function as a type of weekly diary that lets us students reflect upon the reading and hopefully, in the end, see our knowledge progression.

This week continued to look at working in teams but also how to communicate effectively.

Urban Insights - Service proposals

post_thumbnail Yet again, as part of an assignment for the Interaction Technology course, this post will serve as a collection of proposals for a people prediction engine used for urban insights. This engine can predict how many people will be in different parts of a city. It can do this at 10 min, 30 mins, 1 hour, 2 hours, 6 hours, 12 hours and 24 hours. Our task was to think of possible applications of the outputs for this prediction engine.

Design evaluation: game controller and a remote

post_thumbnail

In our everyday life there are numerous handheld devices that we use, cell phones, cameras, and remote controls in various shapes to perform different tasks. What’s even more interesting is considering the thought, or lack of, that has been put down into designing in these devices. This post will investigate two handheld devices – an Microsoft Xbox 360 controller, and the remote control for the Pioneer VSX-921-K HiFi Receiver. These devices will be looked at from different aspects ranging from first impressions, how the devices operate, the user experience, the usability, and a discussion around possible improvements. The post will also generate a set of usability and user experience goals and then pose two questions based on these goals.

How I upgraded my old iMac – The ordeal

post_thumbnail

There’s a bunch of different ways to upgrade an old Apple machine (Late 2008, 24” aluminum iMac”). Usually it involves the easy RAM-upgrade but in my case the old iMac that I have had a fried hard drive. So, this meant I had to get my hands real dirty and literally get under the hood. In this post I’ll talk to you about what that went wrong, why I didn’t choose the local Apple care-center to take care of it and of course, pictures on how it all went.

Design fails – an ongoing album

post_thumbnail

What is good design and what is it that makes it good? Well, to find that out one first has to consider what is really bad design. Or what we like to call, design fails. This post contains a gallery of design fails which I will be trying to continuously update with the design fails that I face in my everyday life. As you might have guessed this is part of an assignment for one the courses that I’m currently undertaking at the University in Malmö, Sweden called Interaction Technology.

Processing – Creating a flag

post_thumbnail

One course I’m currently taking at Malmö University in my master’s programme called Media Software Design, is Interaction Technology. In this course we’re both looking at how to design interaction between man and machine and also learn about their individual inherit limitations. As part of the introduction to this we’re learning the programming language called Processing, which we will later use with the very popular micro-controller Arduino to create physical computing projects. For now we’ve been slowly introduced to Processing and I thought that I’d take the opportunity to post a small tutorial on how to create a flag in Processing.

Say NO to ACTA

post_thumbnail

Enough is enough. I normally don’t blog about things that make me upset but this is something that will affect all of us, unless we act now. We swedes have been continuously monitored by the FRA, another type of monitoring law that allows the radio department of the Swedish defense the right to monitor all communications that travel via cable. This is a travesty but now we’re also running the risk of having the previously rejected ACTA being voted through in the EU parliaments.

We need to make our representatives hear our concerns about this agreement and vote NO on ACTA. Now, this article will go into what ACTA actually is and explain how you can act.

Tools for web developers on Mac OS X

We all know that having the right tools for the job is fundamental. So, to help you guys (and gals!) out, I thought I’d make a post making your search a bit easier. In this post I’ll try and list the most rudimentary things that every Mac OS X web developer should have.
